When I was eight, which was years before the first moon
landing *cough*, I announced my intention to move to the space station when I
grew up.
You know, the wheeled city in space with 50,000 people on
it?
Well. I’m still waiting for them to build it, as well as still waiting to grow up, apparently – but that’s another story.
These days my dreams are more earth-bound, but no less
ambitious. I want to travel to every continent, Lonely Planet-style.
Vagabonding, backpacking, trekking, hostels – whatever I have to do – I’m
going.
Following your dreams is what life’s all about, isn’t it? As
Mark Twain once said, “Twenty
years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do
than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe
harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
Where will your dreams
take you? Share your yearnings in the comments, and then make them happen!
I am a bit hesitant to admit that I am dreamless. And goal less. Muddling along has been my modus operandi for as long as I can remember.
ReplyDeleteNot true, EC! I think the copious amount of planning you put into your garden qualifies as both dream and goal. The results you've achieved are to be envied. :)
DeleteI have dreams. They just have to take a backseat while life gets in the way. If only I were brave enough to do all the things I thought I'd do when I was child.
ReplyDeleteWe do let the adult life steer us away from dreams and add to our fears, don't we, Ellie? I think that's why I'm trying to weave the dreams back into my life and make them a part of me again. Start small and build from there. :)
DeleteOne of my dreams was to become an author. That has happened so that's one dream down. I also have bigger dreams, like you, with world traveling. Such an exciting prospect.
ReplyDeleteYay for you, Angela, for going after your dreams! :)
DeleteAlthough I did not become an aerospace engineer, I did fulfill my dream of stars by finding the observatory and volunteering there. Writing is another dream. Every day I wake up and tell myself my new goal... to be more successful at this writing thing. I'd like to travel more. Some day I'd like to see the ruins of Sumer, but I fear they are more ruined with all the wars.
ReplyDeleteThat's a big problem, Mary. So much has been destroyed in modern times, not only by wars, but by "progress." Very sad. You have a good handle on making your dreams happen!
DeleteGood luck backpacking to Antarctica, River. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'd like to one day travel more. Of course, that means the dream of being a successful writer will need to happen, so I can have the money to travel.
Well...Antarctica will have to be by cruise ship, Cherie. ;) I'm currently researching the cheaper ways to travel so I can do it on a shoestring!
DeleteDid you check out the railroad thing? They were giving free rides to authors a while back.
DeleteI hadn't heard that, Mary. I think there are many hidden opportunities if you search hard enough!
DeleteYou could contract yourself for a reality show trekking over the whole world and let the network pay for it! :) When I was little, I wanted to be Indiana Jones. He had the coolest adventures! Now all I wish is to travel off the continent at least once in my life. Of course I would love to be a successful writer too.
ReplyDeleteNo, Christine! No reality shows! *shudder* Indiana Jones is the coolest character...except for the snakes and spiders he keeps running into.
DeleteOne of our dreams is to visit the remains of all the ancient civilizations. Done the Mayans, Chinese and Egyptians. Still the Sumerians, India, Siam, Inca, Greece and Rome to go, and a couple of others. My other dream since a boy is to climb Everest. Unlikely to happen but one day I hope to at least reach base camp.
ReplyDeleteYou've seen some amazing things, Graeme! Greece and Italy are awesome to see the ancient structures sitting alongside the modern. Everest (even Napal) is out for me with my altitude problems, which is a bummer.
DeleteOh, I'm coming with you, River!
ReplyDeleteAwesome, Gwen! We can storm the back roads together. :)
DeleteI'd love to write more novels--say, fifteen or twenty really good ones.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love to travel, too! I like going to non-western places. I've been to China, India, Turkey, Russia. And I'd love to go to the Stans, Lebanon, back to Germany, to Indonesia.
We should start a travel club, Catherine! Turkey is one of my favs. I want to get to Egypt someday too.
DeleteI'm right there with you on that space station. I think I was about eight when we landed on the moon too!
ReplyDeleteI think living on the space station would rock, widdershins! We could be neighbors there. :)
DeleteHi RIver - I'd certainly like to see more of the world and definitely go to Australasia ... and explore more - though I suspect I'd have to do it comfortably now ... I'm not sure I'd like to visit space - I'd be worried about returning! I do quite like earth ...
ReplyDeleteI think I need to gather blogging friends in all parts of the world and spend a few days with them ... and travel as I go ...
Good luck - I just think you'll do most of yours ... cheers Hilary
I think if I went up into space, Hilary, it would be a one-way trip for me. :) Visiting blogging friends would be an ideal way to travel. You're definitely on my list for England!
Deletepeople have said I am a bit spacey so I figure i was already there with Martin landau and Barbara Bain:) Dreams can come true if you want it bad enough and patient enough. Actually I went with my best friend to Indianna Pa to the Jimmy Stewart museum and Jamestown NY to the Lucille Ball museum. I could have gone long time ago but I wanted to go with my best friend and she had young kids so 14 yrs later, we went! I want to to go back to Europe and I will! I would love to se Angkhor Wat...and I will and I want to see Macchu Picchu...and I will. Not sure when...but I will!! I want to write a biography on my mom's amazing life...and I will. Actually the last one, I haven't started yet but everyone on the blog has inspired me so thank you!
ReplyDeleteThat's an awesome list, Birgit! I'm always so happy when other people get inspired by discussion in the comments. :)
DeleteI love that quote! One of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteThat's what this whole writing thing is for me...trying something new, despite my long list of fears.
Good for you, Julie! We need to step out of our comfort zone in order to blossom. :)
